read once that the government tried to force a Northern California
Indian tribe, perhaps part of the Maidu or the Yana, to move onto
a
reservation, but a tribesman only needed
to climb the nearest hill and Mt. Shasta would be visible in the
distance, allowing the people to find their way back
home to the
sacred mountain. once, the government even tried to fool the tribe
by force-marching them down to San Francisco, putting them on a ship
and sailing to a new place for the reservation, but the ship had
only sailed up the coast, and once again a member of the tribe climbed
the nearest hill and saw the snow-covered top of
Mt.
Shasta, 14,162 feet above sea level, and the tribe left the reservation
to walk home.
